Mushroom Mosis returns with Trace Elements, their second album, a record that embraces a longing for home.
Rooted in neo-soul, alternative R&B, and Afro-Surinamese traditions, Mushroom Mosis blends smooth vocals with warm, organic live instrumentation and a deep love of improvisation. Their music feels intimate. As they put it: “Music should feel like a conversation between the past, present, and future.”
Trace Elements marks a powerful new chapter, following the 2022 release of The Wellspring. Where their debut explored personal battles with depression, the new album looks outward toward ancestry, migration, joy, and survival. It is music that sits with you but also gets you moving.
From the opener “Show me the Light” (a plea to ancestors for guidance) to the resolve of “Ride” (reclaiming vulnerability after trauma), the album navigates grief (“Shadows”), the grind of hustle culture (“Tired”), and the magnetic pull of Suriname’s soil (“Snowed In” and “Sugarcane”). The album ends with the title track “Trace Elements”: the way back is not the way you came, but light remains.
Live, Mushroom Mosis invites the audience into something that feels part concert, part ritual, part hangout. You will hear vocals in Sranantongo, lyrics that speak from the heart, and grooves that stretch across continents. As Theaterkrant wrote: “Musically, the performance is strong thanks to [Mushroom Mosis]’s beautiful vocals, accompanied by pure African rhythms. These are powerful songs, radiating vitality.”
